Police in Maharashtra have filed charges against a cleric at a madrasa for allegedly giving a 16-year-old student “brutal punishment” after the student allegedly stole a ₹100 watch. The student was half-naked when the cleric had him stripped and gave the other kids in the madrasa instructions to beat and spit on him. This horrifying incident took place at the Jamia Burhanul Uloom Madrasa in Aurangabad, which has been renamed as Chhatrapati Sambhaji Nagar. The Surat-based teenager, who was enrolled at the madrasa in Aurangabad, had allegedly stolen an automatic watch from a nearby shop. This was purportedly captured on CCTV cameras installed in the area and the shopkeeper immediately filed a complaint. The stolen item was returned to the shopkeeper.

Maulana Syed Omar Ali, the madrasa’s cleric, chose to discipline the teenager instead by having him stripped half-naked and giving the order for the boy’s classmates to beat and spit on him. However, the victim’s family discovered the cleric’s actions when they saw the incident on camera and filed a complaint with the local police right away. The cleric was booked under the Minor Students Protection Act after a case was filed against him.
