A heartbreaking accident claimed the life of a 10-year-old boy in Sai Baba Nagar, Mailardevpally, on Monday, drawing attention to the dangers children face while attempting to retrieve kites from unsafe structures.

Child climbs shed roof to retrieve kite

The victim, identified as Hemanth, was the son of Mahender and Sujatha, natives of Mancherial district. According to the police, the incident occurred when the child climbed onto the roof of a nearby company shed to collect a kite that had become stuck there during play.

Residents said kite-flying is common in the area, especially among children, and rooftops are often accessed without realising the risks involved.

Roofing sheets give way, fatal injuries sustained

While attempting to retrieve the kite, Hemanth reportedly lost his balance and slipped through the roofing sheets of the shed. The fall resulted in severe injuries, and police confirmed that the child died on the spot due to the impact.

The sudden tragedy left the family and local community in shock, with neighbours expressing grief over the loss of a young life in what began as an innocent childhood activity.

Body shifted for post-mortem, case registered

The body was shifted to Osmania General Hospital for post-mortem examination. Police have registered a case and stated that further investigation is underway to ascertain all circumstances surrounding the incident.

Officials have urged parents and guardians to closely monitor children during kite-flying and to discourage them from climbing buildings, sheds, or other unsafe structures.

Safety concerns highlighted

The incident once again highlights the need for greater awareness about child safety, particularly in residential and industrial neighbourhoods where fragile roofing materials pose serious risks.
