In a groundbreaking achievement for women in the Indian armed forces, Major Deeksha C Moodadevanavar from Davangere, Karnataka, has become the first woman officer to be awarded the prestigious Balidan Badge—a symbol of unmatched valour, commitment, and service in the Indian Army’s elite Special Forces.
Her military journey began with the National Cadet Corps (NCC), where her early exposure to discipline and leadership laid the foundation for a lifelong mission to serve the country. She later joined the Indian Army through the Short Service Commission, trained at the Army Medical Corps Centre in Lucknow, and began her service as a medical officer at 303 Field Hospital in Tangtse, Leh.
Despite being rejected twice from the Parachute Regiment due to physical challenges, Major Deeksha’s resolve never faltered. In December 2022, she successfully cleared the intensive selection process to join the Special Forces, fulfilling a dream many told her was impossible.
Her exemplary performance as regimental medical officer in high-risk zones and during critical special operations earned her the rare Balidan Badge—a recognition that very few in the forces receive. She also served in Operation Dost in earthquake-hit Turkey, where her crisis response underscored the vital role of military medics.
Major Deeksha’s historic milestone shatters stereotypes and inspires a generation of young women to dream bigger and bolder.
