A 28-year-old man has been taken into custody in Uttar Pradesh’s Mahoba district after allegedly killing his mother with an axe following a dispute over Rs 60 sought to buy cannabis.
The incident took place in Rawatpura Khurd village under Kulpahar police station limits. According to police, Mohan Yadav had asked his 51-year-old mother, Mula Devi, for Rs 60. She reportedly refused, saying she did not have the money.
Dispute turns fatal
Police said Mohan, who was reportedly addicted to cannabis, became angry following the refusal and picked up an axe kept inside the house. He allegedly attacked his mother repeatedly, causing fatal injuries.
Mula Devi died at the spot. Police said the accused remained near the house after the incident until the matter came to light.
The incident came to light when Mula Devi’s elder son, Sohan, returned home. He reportedly found his mother lying injured and informed the police. Neighbours also gathered after hearing the commotion.
Police begin investigation
A police team and forensic personnel reached the scene and collected evidence. The woman’s body was sent for post-mortem examination as part of the investigation.
Police have taken Mohan into custody and are questioning him. Officials are investigating the circumstances surrounding the killing and the allegations concerning his drug use.
The incident has once again brought attention to the devastating consequences that substance dependence can have on families, particularly when addiction is accompanied by financial disputes and violence.
