A heartbreaking video showing a man breaking down in tears as he steps out of prison has gone viral on social media, triggering widespread grief and anger over what many are calling a grave miscarriage of justice. The clip is linked to Vishnu Tiwari, a resident of Uttar Pradesh’s Lalitpur district, who spent two decades behind bars in a false rape case.
Arrested in 2000, jailed for life
Vishnu was arrested in September 2000 on charges of rape and under provisions of the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act. In 2003, a trial court convicted him and sentenced him to life imprisonment. He was lodged in Agra Central Jail and, shockingly, was never granted bail or parole during his incarceration.
Life outside prison collapsed
During the 20 years Vishnu spent in jail, his life outside the prison walls fell apart. He lost both his parents and two brothers, was unable to attend their last rites, and his family faced severe social ostracism. The five acres of land owned by the family were sold, and his house fell into ruin.
After his release in 2021, Vishnu said, “I am happy, but I don’t know what to do now. My house is in ruins… My family members are dead.”
Appeal delayed for 16 years
Vishnu’s appeal remained pending before the Allahabad High Court for nearly 16 years due to procedural defects in filing. The High Court later observed that even after Vishnu completed 14 years in prison, the State government failed to consider commuting his life sentence.
His acquittal finally came in 2021, largely due to sustained legal efforts by his lawyer, Shweta Singh Rana.
Public anger and calls for accountability
The viral video has reignited debate on wrongful convictions and accountability. Social media users questioned whether the system that jailed an innocent man for 20 years would ever be held responsible. Many demanded compensation and institutional reforms to prevent such prolonged injustice.
