In a shocking incident from Keonjhar, a man allegedly carried his deceased sister’s skeletal remains to a bank to prove her death after repeated difficulties in withdrawing her savings.

The man, identified as Jitu Munda, 52, said he acted out of frustration after failing to access money deposited by his late sister.

Video sparks outrage

A video of Munda carrying the remains wrapped in a sack to the bank went viral on social media, drawing widespread criticism and concern over bureaucratic hurdles faced by rural families.

Police said the remains had been exhumed before being taken to the branch.

Sister had deposited savings

According to reports, Munda’s 56-year-old sister Kalara had deposited around ₹19,300 in the bank a few months before her death after selling livestock.

Following her death earlier this year, Munda reportedly visited the bank several times seeking to withdraw the money.

He claimed officials repeatedly asked for proof of death, leading to his extreme protest.

Bank denies asking for remains

The bank denied demanding the physical presence of the deceased and said staff had only requested legally required documents such as a death certificate and proof of legal heirship.

It stated the incident appeared to arise from lack of awareness of formal procedures.

The bank also confirmed that the funds have now been released to the legal heirs.

Government orders inquiry

The Odisha government said the matter is under investigation, while district authorities expressed concern and promised action if lapses were found.

Officials later helped arrange documents and offered financial assistance to the family.
