A 42-year-old computer operator collapsed and died in Gujarat’s Bharuch after allegedly being chased and harassed by four men posing as policemen who attempted to extort money from him.
The deceased, Urvish Modi, worked with a private company in Dahod. He was riding his moped with his wife near Rahadpor Road when the accused, travelling on two-wheelers, intercepted the couple.
Alleged extortion and collapse
According to the family, the men were wearing khaki trousers and claimed to be police personnel. They allegedly questioned Modi about his damaged number plate and demanded money.
Modi, who was a heart patient, reportedly pleaded with them to let him go, saying he was unwell. Despite his repeated requests, the harassment allegedly continued. Moments later, he collapsed on the road.
Locals rushed him to a private hospital, but he died on the way.
The Gujarat Police registered an accidental death case and launched an investigation. Police Inspector R M Vasava said CCTV footage from the area shows four men approaching and speaking to the couple.
“We are identifying them and verifying whether they were authorised by any bank or agency. If the family’s allegations are substantiated, a formal offence will be registered,” he said.
Family alleges repeated harassment
Modi’s wife, a school employee, alleged that the family had been harassed for the past three months by men posing as policemen and bank recovery agents.
“We told them we have no pending loan. Then they started demanding money over the damaged number plate,” she claimed.
Local residents also alleged that imposters posing as police or recovery agents have been targeting motorists in the city, subjecting them to mental harassment and extorting money.
Further investigation is underway.
