A 38-year-old man died in a tragic road accident after an autorickshaw lost control while attempting to avoid a porcupine that suddenly crossed the road in Kerala.

The deceased has been identified as Rajileesh, a resident of Naripatta. He was travelling with his wife and two children while returning from a marriage function on Sunday night.

Accident near bus stop

According to police, the incident occurred near the Balavadi bus stop at Thoneri when a porcupine unexpectedly crossed the road.

In an attempt to avoid hitting the animal, the autorickshaw driver reportedly lost control of the vehicle. The autorickshaw veered off the road and crashed.

The impact left the occupants injured, prompting local residents and emergency responders to rush them to a nearby hospital.

Victim succumbs to injuries

Rajileesh, who sustained serious injuries in the accident, later succumbed while undergoing treatment, police said.

His wife and two children, who were also travelling in the autorickshaw, survived the crash. Authorities have not disclosed the extent of their injuries.

Investigation underway

Police have registered a case and launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the accident.

Officials said the body was handed over to family members after the completion of the post-mortem examination.

The incident highlights the risks posed by sudden wildlife crossings on roads, particularly during night-time travel in areas close to forests and rural habitats.
