A 50-year-old man died after he allegedly suffered an epileptic seizure and fell into a bonfire he was warming himself by in Bhakora village under the Chauri police station limits, police said on Sunday.
Incident occurred outside home
The incident took place on Saturday night around 8 pm. The deceased has been identified as Basawan, also known as Kallu (50), a resident of Bhakora village. According to the police, Basawan had a known history of epilepsy.
Station House Officer (SHO) Ram Sarikh Gautam said Basawan was sitting outside his house near a bonfire, trying to keep himself warm due to the cold weather. During this time, he reportedly suffered an epileptic seizure, lost control, and fell into the fire.
Family unaware initially
At the time of the incident, Basawan’s wife, Jaydei, was inside the house attending to household work. As a result, no one immediately noticed what had happened.
Nearly half an hour later, villagers passing through the area sensed the smell of burning flesh and rushed towards the spot. They found Basawan lying face down in the bonfire, with nearly half of his body severely burnt. By the time he was discovered, he had already died, the SHO said.
Police action and last rites
Police were informed about the incident soon after. Officers reached the village, examined the body, and conducted preliminary procedures. As there were no suspicious circumstances reported by the family or villagers, the body was handed over to the relatives after examination.
Basawan’s last rites were performed by his family later on Saturday night.
Villagers in shock
The tragic incident has left the village in shock, with locals describing Basawan as a quiet man who earned his livelihood through daily labour. Residents said the incident highlights the risks faced by people with medical conditions during winter, when open fires are commonly used to keep warm in rural areas.
Police have advised families to take additional precautions, especially when individuals with health conditions are near open flames.
