A 35-year-old man died after jumping from a flyover in Ambattur on Tuesday night, marking his third reported suicide attempt since 2015, police said.
Incident on Inner Ring Road
The deceased, identified as Saravanan, a resident of Vinayagapuram in Kolathur, jumped from the Inner Ring Road flyover near Gnanamoorthy Nagar. He was working with a private company in Ambattur and was the son of Manoharan (64), a retired government employee.
Police said Saravanan sustained fatal injuries in the fall. His body was recovered from the spot and sent to Government Kilpauk Medical College Hospital for post-mortem examination.
History of distress and earlier attempts
During preliminary inquiry, police found that Saravanan had been under prolonged mental stress. About six months ago, he had reportedly jumped from the second floor of his house, resulting in a leg fracture. Police records also indicate an earlier suicide attempt in 2015.
No suicide note was found, officials said.
Police appeal for awareness and support
Police have urged families and workplaces to remain alert to signs of emotional distress and seek timely professional help. The incident has once again highlighted the importance of mental health awareness and accessible counselling support.
Assistance is available for those experiencing suicidal thoughts. In Tamil Nadu, the health helpline 104 and Sneha Suicide Prevention Centre (044-2464 0050) offer confidential support.
