In a rare and tragic incident, a 48-year-old man lost his life after a tree branch snapped and fell on him, reportedly triggered by monkeys jumping across it. The accident occurred on Friday morning in the Sabang area of West Midnapore district.

The deceased, Tarun Panja, a resident of Panpara in Balpai, was on his way back home after visiting relatives to invite them for his granddaughter’s upcoming rice ceremony.

Sudden accident during routine journey

According to local sources, Panja was cycling through the Paschimchak area under Pingla police station when a group of monkeys was seen leaping between branches of a roadside tree. During the activity, a large branch suddenly broke off and fell directly onto Panja’s head.

The impact caused him to collapse instantly on the road. Eyewitnesses reported heavy bleeding, and he was rushed to the nearby Pingla hospital. However, doctors declared him brought dead.

Family tragedy ahead of celebration

The incident has cast a shadow over what was meant to be a joyous occasion for the family. Panja’s granddaughter’s rice ceremony was scheduled to take place in just four days.

Family members, who were informed shortly after the accident, are said to be in deep shock. His brother described the loss as devastating, especially given the circumstances and timing.

The body has been sent to Kharagpur sub-divisional hospital for postmortem examination. Local leaders have termed the incident unfortunate and have assured support to the bereaved family.
