A man in his 30s allegedly murdered his 29-year-old ex-wife at her apartment in Hyderabad after reportedly blaming her for his inability to return to Canada and for the death of his mother, police said.
According to officials from the Telangana Police, the accused had married the woman in 2022 before moving to Canada for work in an IT firm. She later joined him there. However, differences arose between the couple, and she returned to India, subsequently filing a domestic violence case in Maharashtra.
Divorce and rising tensions
The couple divorced in 2024, and the woman remarried in April 2025. Meanwhile, a look-out circular was reportedly issued against the accused in connection with the domestic violence case, and his passport was suspended, preventing him from travelling back to Canada.
Police said he returned to India in March 2025 following his mother’s death and had been unemployed since, residing in Peddapalli district. Investigators believe he held his former wife responsible for his personal and family distress.
Planned attack
Officials said the accused tracked his ex-wife’s address through social media and had been staying in a Hyderabad hostel for nearly two months. He allegedly conducted a recce of the apartment before the attack.
On Wednesday, he reportedly entered the building carrying a bag containing two knives, a drilling machine and a can of petrol. He barged into her room, locked it from inside and stabbed her repeatedly in the head.
When police arrived, he had allegedly poured petrol inside the room and locked himself in the toilet, threatening to set the house ablaze. After persuasion, he surrendered and was taken into custody.
The victim’s second husband has alleged that she was three months pregnant, though police said this remains unconfirmed pending post-mortem findings.
