A 30-year-old man was arrested in Mumbai’s Chembur area for allegedly sexually assaulting a nine-year-old girl after posing as a “doctor uncle”, police said. The incident occurred on Sunday, December 14, near a local medical shop close to the child’s residence, where she was playing at the time.
The accused has been identified as Karan Adsule, a resident of Kurla. Police said he approached the child under the pretext of conducting a routine medical check-up, falsely claiming to be a doctor. Trusting him, the girl complied, following which the offence allegedly took place.
Swift complaint and arrest
After the child informed her family about the incident, they immediately approached the police. The Nehru Nagar police registered a case under laws meant to protect minors and arrested Adsule from the spot around 9.30 am the same day.
During verification, police confirmed that the accused did not possess any medical qualifications or licence and had deliberately impersonated a doctor to gain the child’s confidence.
“There is no CCTV coverage in the immediate area, which limits visual evidence. However, statements of the victim, family members and local residents are being recorded to establish the exact sequence of events,” a police officer said.
Child provided care and counselling
Police said the victim has been provided medical examination and counselling support in accordance with child protection protocols. Authorities have emphasised that the identity of the child is being strictly protected as mandated by law.
Investigators are also checking whether the accused has any prior criminal record or involvement in similar incidents elsewhere. The probe remains ongoing.
Police appeal to parents
The incident has once again highlighted concerns over child safety in residential neighbourhoods. Police have urged parents and guardians to caution children against interacting with strangers, even those claiming authority or professional credentials.
