A 45-year-old man allegedly died by suicide outside his in-laws’ residence in Hallupura village of Etawah district on Tuesday night, police said.
The deceased, identified as Anil Kumar, was a resident of Karhal in Mainpuri district and worked as a labourer. Officials from the Uttar Pradesh Police said Kumar had been married in Hallupura nearly 20 years ago and had two children. His wife passed away two years ago.
Long-standing dispute
According to police, Kumar had been in a relationship for about 12 years with Lakshmi (40), the wife of his brother-in-law. Investigators said that following his wife’s death, Kumar insisted on living with Lakshmi, which led to repeated disputes within the family.
Neighbours told police that around 10 years ago Kumar allegedly eloped with Lakshmi to Delhi, where they frequently argued before she eventually returned to her husband’s village. About three months ago, Kumar reportedly returned to Hallupura, leading to another confrontation that required police intervention.
Incident outside residence
Police said Kumar returned again on Tuesday night. Lakshmi told investigators that she did not hear him calling out. She said she heard a gunshot and found him lying near the main gate in a pool of blood.
Officers from Bakewar police station, along with forensic teams, reached the spot and recovered a pistol from the scene. Additional Superintendent of Police (Rural) Shrishchand supervised the inquiry.
Station in-charge Vipin Kumar Malik said the preliminary probe suggests suicide, though all angles are being examined. The body has been sent for post-mortem, and further action will depend on the report.
