On Sunday, Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh resigned amidst ongoing violence in the northeastern state. Singh submitted his resignation letter to Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla at the Raj Bhavan, stating, “It has been an honour to serve the people of Manipur.” Accompanying Singh were state BJP president A Sharda, BJP’s North East Manipur in-charge Sambit Patra, and at least 19 MLAs.

In his resignation letter, Singh expressed gratitude to the central government for its timely interventions and development efforts aimed at safeguarding the people of Manipur. “I am extremely grateful to the Central government for timely actions, interventions, developmental work and implementation of various projects for safeguarding the interest of every single Manipuri,” he wrote.

Singh’s resignation came shortly after he had publicly affirmed that his government was making every possible effort to restore peace in the violence-hit state. He had stated, “The state government has been making all possible efforts to restore peace and to ensure that people live together peacefully as before.”

The resignation marks a significant political shift as the state grapples with continuing unrest, with Singh’s leadership under scrutiny.
