A final-year MBBS student at Bidar Institute of Medical Sciences (BRIMS) allegedly died by suicide in his hostel room, with preliminary investigations pointing to distress caused by online gaming losses and mounting debt.

Incident in hostel room

The deceased, identified as 21-year-old Anishkar Chavan from Kalaburagi district, was found hanging from a ceiling fan in his hostel room. The incident is believed to have occurred late Monday night and came to light on Tuesday morning.

Police officials confirmed that a case has been registered and an investigation is underway.

Gaming losses and financial stress

According to police sources, Anishkar had been actively involved in online gaming and had reportedly borrowed money from friends to continue playing.

Investigators said he had accumulated losses of around ₹80,000. Messages recovered from his mobile phone indicated that he was distressed over losing money and felt emotionally overwhelmed.

Family unaware of struggle

Family members expressed shock, stating that Anishkar had never shared details about his involvement in online gaming or financial difficulties.

His father said the family had made significant sacrifices to support their children’s education and has called for a thorough probe into the incident.

Academic background

Anishkar was in the final year of his MBBS course and was expected to complete his degree in the coming months. His siblings are also in the medical field, reflecting a strong academic background.

Institute to introduce counselling measures

Authorities at BRIMS described the incident as deeply distressing and said steps are being planned to strengthen student counselling and mental health support systems.
