Kakinada: A 65-year-old mechanic from Andhra Pradesh‘s East Godavari district has earned widespread admiration after building a homemade escalator inside his house to help his wife, who suffers from severe knee pain. The innovative device, designed and assembled in just 20 days, enables her to comfortably climb the 21 steps leading to the upper floor of their home.
Innovation born out of care
Satti Siva Narayana Reddy, a resident of Arthamuru village, designed the homemade escalator for his wife, Satyaveni, 58, who has been experiencing severe knee pain that made climbing stairs increasingly difficult.
Instead of undertaking expensive renovations or installing a commercial lift, Reddy decided to build a practical and affordable solution himself.
Completed in just 20 days
Drawing on his experience as a mechanic, Reddy designed and installed the escalator within 20 days.
The project reportedly cost around ₹70,000, making it a cost-effective alternative to conventional home lifts, which are significantly more expensive.
The device allows Satyaveni to safely travel between the ground and first floors without having to climb the home’s 21 steps.
Social media praises thoughtful gesture
The heartwarming story has gone viral on social media, with many users praising Reddy’s ingenuity, dedication and love for his wife.
Netizens described the homemade escalator as a practical example of innovation driven by compassion rather than luxury.
Many also appreciated how the mechanic used his technical skills to improve his wife’s quality of life instead of relying on costly commercial solutions.
A simple solution with a big impact
The homemade escalator has highlighted how everyday innovation can make life easier for people facing mobility challenges.
Reddy’s thoughtful initiative has not only eased his wife’s daily routine but has also inspired many by demonstrating that creativity and care can often provide effective solutions to real-life problems.
