The death toll in the suspected milk adulteration case in Andhra Pradesh’s East Godavari district has risen to 16, with three more persons currently undergoing treatment, officials confirmed.
Contaminated milk triggers health crisis
The incident dates back to mid-February, when adulterated milk supplied in parts of Lalacheruvu allegedly caused severe health complications among residents. Victims reported symptoms such as vomiting, abdominal pain, lack of urine output, and acute kidney dysfunction, leading to multiple hospitalisations.
The case came to light on February 22 after a cluster of patients from Chowdeswaranagar and Swaroopanagar exhibited signs of acute renal failure, prompting an immediate epidemiological investigation by health authorities.
Toxic substance detected
According to an official release, laboratory tests revealed that all 16 victims died due to multi-organ failure triggered by acute renal failure. The condition was linked to the consumption of milk contaminated with ethylene glycol, a toxic chemical commonly used in industrial products.
Medical findings indicated elevated blood urea and serum creatinine levels among the victims, pointing towards severe toxic exposure.
Source traced to local dairy unit
Authorities have identified a dairy unit in Narasapuram village under Korukonda mandal as the suspected source of the contaminated milk. The supply, which reportedly reached over 100 families, was immediately halted once the unit came under scrutiny.
