The Uttar Pradesh government has directed the establishment of Mission Shakti Kendras in every police station under the ongoing Mission Shakti 5.0 initiative. The centres aim to provide a single-window platform for women to report crimes, access government services, and receive support and guidance.

Key features of Mission Shakti Kendras

Senior police officials said the centres will provide a dedicated space for women where trained personnel, including women police officers, can handle complaints promptly. The centres will also have linkages with government departments, NGOs, and other stakeholders to ensure comprehensive support.

Services at the centres will include:

  • Counselling for victims of crimes
  • Legal aid and guidance
  • Rehabilitation services
  • Regular monitoring and evaluation of cases

Officials said the centres are designed to create a safe and supportive environment, ensure prompt action against crimes, empower women and girls through education, and improve coordination among stakeholders.

Personnel and infrastructure

Each Mission Shakti Kendra will be staffed by:

  • One in-charge inspector or sub-inspector (priority to women officers)
  • One to four sub-inspectors
  • Four to 15 constables (50% women)
  • One to two women home guards

Additional counsellors will be appointed if required. Personnel will manage women’s help desks, oversee Anti-Romeo squads, and maintain a women’s beat plan. They will also keep parallel records of FIRs, investigations, and preventive actions.

The centres will be equipped with a separate room, computer, records, stationery, women’s toilet, and other necessary resources to ensure smooth functioning.

Training and outreach

Training and capacity-building programmes will focus on handling complaints, counselling, and legal procedures. Regular programmes will be conducted to enhance the skills and knowledge of personnel, while outreach activities will target marginalised and vulnerable groups.

Officials emphasised that the Mission Shakti Kendras will strengthen the government’s efforts to respond effectively to crimes against women, while also promoting awareness, education, and empowerment.
