Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent appeal encouraging work-from-home practices and reduced unnecessary travel has sparked concern among cab drivers and transport operators in Karnataka, with many fearing a fresh blow to their livelihoods.

The Karnataka State Travel Operators’ Association (KSTOA) has written to the Prime Minister seeking urgent support and safeguards for the employee transportation sector.

Cab drivers fear another crisis

Industry representatives say a wider shift towards remote work could sharply reduce demand for daily office commuting services, directly affecting thousands of cab drivers, fleet operators, and small transport businesses across the state.

Many drivers reportedly fear a repeat of the financial struggles experienced during the pandemic, when prolonged work-from-home arrangements drastically reduced bookings and income opportunities.

Travel operators seek government support

The association has urged the Centre to consider the economic impact on drivers and transport workers while promoting sustainable commuting practices.

Operators say the employee transportation sector supports thousands of families and remains an important part of Bengaluru’s corporate ecosystem.

They also warned that falling demand could create difficulties in vehicle loan repayments, maintenance costs, and job security for drivers.

Debate over sustainability and livelihoods

Prime Minister Modi’s comments encouraging public transport usage and reduced travel are being linked to broader efforts aimed at easing traffic congestion and improving sustainability.

However, the remarks have also triggered debate over balancing environmental goals with protecting employment in sectors dependent on everyday travel and office commuting.

Travel operators are now hoping for policy support that can help safeguard livelihoods while adapting to changing workplace trends
