Mohan Bhagwat Urges Families To Have Three Children, Sparks Political Reactions

RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat has called for families to have at least three children, citing demographic science to prevent a population decline. Speaking in Nagpur, he emphasized the importance of maintaining a fertility rate above 2.1 to ensure societal survival, warning that communities with lower rates risk extinction.

Bhagwat referenced India’s population policies from 1998 and 2002, stating that these policies highlighted the need to prevent any community’s population from dropping below replacement levels. “Since fractional children aren’t possible, three children per family align with population science,” he remarked.

The comments triggered political responses, particularly in Bihar, where debates over caste-based censuses and population control policies are prominent. RJD spokesperson Mrityunjay Tiwari criticized the RSS and BJP for contradicting their own population control advocacy. “Such remarks conflict with government awareness campaigns on controlling population growth,” Tiwari said.

JD(U) spokesperson Arvind Nishad echoed these concerns, advocating for education as the primary tool for population management. Highlighting Chief Minister Nitish Kumar’s efforts, Nishad argued that empowering women through education has proven effective in addressing population challenges.

Bhagwat’s statement has reignited debates about India’s demographic strategies, with critics questioning the consistency between political rhetoric and ground-level initiatives.
