New Delhi: Indian farmers can expect some welcome relief this year as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) predicts the monsoon will arrive on May 31, bringing much-needed rain to the Kerala coast in the southwest.

This is an earlier arrival than last year’s monsoon, which reached Kerala on June 8th, marking the latest start in four years.

The IMD has also forecast above-average rainfall for India this year, with projections ranging from 96% to 104% of the 50-year average of 87 cm.

This positive outlook is attributed to La Nina conditions in the Pacific Ocean, which bring cooler temperatures and typically lead to wetter monsoons for India, compared to El Nino’s warming effect that creates drier conditions. El Nino was a major factor in last year’s below-average rainfall, with August experiencing the driest conditions in over a century.
