A deeply tragic incident unfolded in Parichha Sahi locality of Jeypore town in Odisha on Tuesday, where a man allegedly died of a heart attack shortly after learning about his mother’s death. Mother passes away after prolonged illness

The deceased have been identified as S. Sahibani (80) and her son S. Ravi Kumar, residents of Parichha Sahi in Jeypore. Family members said Sahibani had been bedridden for a long period after suffering a paralytic stroke and was dependent on constant care.

Ravi Kumar, who remained unmarried, was devoted to looking after his mother and attended to all her daily needs. On Tuesday morning, after completing her routine care, he stepped out briefly to inspect their agricultural land.

Son collapses after seeing mother dead

When Ravi returned home, he found his mother unresponsive. The sudden loss reportedly left him inconsolable. Family members said Ravi collapsed a short while later and suffered a suspected heart attack.

Despite efforts by relatives and neighbours, he could not be revived and was declared dead soon after.

Family circumstances add to tragedy

Relatives said Ravi had chosen not to marry so he could care for his ailing mother. His sister, S. Sukanti, who also lives in the same house, is unmarried due to mental health issues.

After the death of Sahibani’s husband several years ago, the family largely survived on pension income and earnings from their agricultural land.

Neighbours perform last rites

News of the double tragedy spread quickly, drawing local residents to the house. Scenes of grief prevailed as the bodies of the mother and son were taken out one after the other for the last rites.

Neighbours stepped forward to assist the bereaved family in conducting the funeral rituals, offering logistical and emotional support during the difficult time.

Local residents described the family as quiet and self-reliant, and many said the incident was a painful reminder of the emotional bonds and silent struggles within households caring for elderly and ailing members.

Police said no foul play was suspected in either death.
