Ashwathnagar residents awoke to heartbreaking news on Friday, 5 December, after the bodies of a well-known obstetrician, Dr Jayashree (aged 55–57), and her son Akash (32) were discovered hanging inside their residence. The incident has left the locality in deep mourning, with neighbours recalling the family’s earlier tragedies and the emotional toll they appeared to carry.
According to preliminary reports, Dr Jayashree was found hanging on the ground floor, while Akash was discovered on the first floor of the house. Police believe both deaths occurred late on the night of 4 December, as the rooms remained locked until the following afternoon.
The Vinoba Nagar Police have registered a case of unnatural death and conducted an inspection of the scene. Officers are now piecing together the sequence of events and circumstances that may have led to the double suicide.
Property transfer and a possible argument
Early inputs suggest that an argument may have taken place between the mother and son late on Thursday night. Dr Jayashree, who ran a maternity hospital and was regarded as a dedicated and compassionate practitioner, is reported to have left a death note. Before taking her life, she is believed to have transferred her property to Akash and her daughter-in-law.
Police suspect that Akash died shortly after his mother, although the exact timeline is still under examination.
It was Akash’s second wife, who had been staying in another room in the same house, who alerted the authorities after discovering the tragedy.
Third suicide in the same household
In a distressing pattern, this incident marks the third suicide in the family, all within the same home. Akash’s first wife, Navyashree, had died by suicide one-and-a-half to three years ago, also by hanging. That devastating loss had reportedly left both Akash and his mother deeply traumatised and struggling to rebuild their emotional stability.
Friends and neighbours recall the period following the first tragedy as one of immense pain for the family, with both mother and son finding it difficult to recover from the shock.
A remarriage overshadowed by unresolved grief
In May 2025, Akash remarried in what many hoped would bring renewed happiness into his life. However, the emotional wounds from the earlier tragedy appear to have remained raw. Investigators suspect that prolonged grief, unresolved trauma, and the cumulative impact of personal conflict may have contributed to the final decision taken by the mother and son.
At present, the precise motive is unclear, and police are examining all angles, including family dynamics and psychological distress.
