Ranchi: An MSc student was found dead in her hostel room at Birla Institute of Technology (BIT) Mesra, with police recovering a diary containing entries indicating that she had been distressed over family-related issues.
The student, identified as 24-year-old Anjali Suman from Jharkhand’s Godda district, was found in Hostel No. 9 on Friday night. She was pursuing an MSc in Physics at the institute.
Diary recovered from hostel room
Police said no suicide note was found at the scene. However, investigators recovered a diary in which Anjali had reportedly written about stress related to family circumstances.
According to police, the entries indicated emotional distress, and investigators are examining whether the circumstances described in the diary had any connection with her death. Police have stressed that the exact circumstances are still being investigated.
Her father reportedly told police that she had been distressed in recent days. The body was sent to Rajendra Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) for post-mortem examination as part of the investigation.
Institute says support system is available
The incident has drawn attention to the emotional challenges faced by students living away from their families.
BIT Mesra management said the institute has support mechanisms for students dealing with mental health concerns, including access to a psychiatrist for counselling and a mentoring system.
Police are questioning people and examining evidence from the hostel as they work to establish the sequence of events. The post-mortem findings and further investigation are expected to provide additional information.
