KUNO, MADHYA PRADESH: In a landmark moment for India’s ambitious cheetah reintroduction programme, India-born female cheetah Mukhi has given birth to five cubs at Kuno National Park (KNP). Chief Minister Mohan Yadav announced the development on Thursday, calling it a “historic milestone” that signals a new phase of hope for Project Cheetah, the world’s first intercontinental wild cheetah translocation initiative. The birth marks the first time an India-born cheetah has successfully reproduced since the species was reintroduced to the country in September 2022, more than seven decades after it went extinct. Officials described the event as “unprecedented”, reinforcing confidence in the long-term viability of the cheetah population in Indian habitats.
Mukhi becomes first India-born cheetah to reproduce
Mukhi, at 33 months of age, holds a special place in India’s conservation narrative. Born on Indian soil to one of the translocated Namibian females, she is the first cheetah in the country’s modern history to grow up entirely in native conditions. Her successful reproduction represents a significant biological and ecological milestone. Chief Minister Yadav said the mother and her cubs are in good health. In a message posted on X, he wrote: “A historic milestone has been achieved as Indian-born cheetah Mukhi has given birth to five cubs in Kuno National Park, Madhya Pradesh. The mother and cubs are doing well.” Wildlife officials monitoring Mukhi through remote cameras said the cubs appear active and are receiving adequate care. The next 12 weeks will be crucial to ensure survival, as cheetah cub mortality rates are naturally high in the wild.
Why the birth is significant for Project Cheetah
Launched in 2022, Project Cheetah is India’s attempt to bring back the world’s fastest land animal after it vanished from the subcontinent in the early 1950s. The first batch of eight cheetahs—five females and three males—was brought from Namibia and released by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on 17 September 2022. This was followed by 12 more from South Africa in February 2023. Since then, Kuno has witnessed mixed outcomes: successful hunts, mating behaviour, and two earlier litters born to Namibian female Aasha; but also deaths caused by infections, territorial fights and climatic stresses. Mukhi’s litter is especially important for several reasons: proof of adaptation, as India-born cheetahs can now reach reproductive maturity; genetic strength, because it supports long-term diversity; programme stability, signalling improved habitat suitability; and conservation morale, offering a boost after recent setbacks. “This significant step forward strengthens optimism about establishing a self-sustaining and genetically diverse cheetah population in India,” Yadav said.
Challenges and preparations ahead
While the birth is being celebrated nationally, experts caution that the early weeks are critical. In wild cheetah populations across Africa, nearly 70% of cubs do not survive beyond three months due to predation, disease and maternal stress. Forest officials in Madhya Pradesh have increased patrolling around Mukhi’s territory to minimise disturbance. Human presence has been restricted, and monitoring is being done using drones and camera traps. Veterinary teams are on standby but will intervene only if necessary, following the “minimum interference” protocol recommended by South African experts. A recent team of cheetah specialists from South Africa, which visited Kuno and Gandhi Sagar last month, noted improvements but also stressed the need for larger landscapes. With Mukhi’s reproduction, the importance of habitat corridors and additional release sites becomes more urgent.
The road ahead for India’s cheetah programme
Mukhi’s litter pushes India’s cheetah population upward and lends fresh momentum to the government’s conservation efforts. The long-term plan is to have 35–40 adult cheetahs across multiple landscapes, enabling natural gene flow. Gandhi Sagar Wildlife Sanctuary is being developed as the next release site to reduce pressure on Kuno. Cheetahs currently in enclosures there will be released in phases beginning next year. The success of India-born cheetahs like Mukhi will be crucial for the programme’s future. Consistent breeding, reduced mortality and expanded habitats will determine whether the species can truly return to the Indian wild. For now, Mukhi’s five cubs mark an inspiring and tangible step forward, symbolising the revival of a species that once vanished from India.
