As Christmas approaches, churches across Mumbai are putting the final touches to their Christmas trees and holy cribs, stringing lights and festoons to welcome the faithful. From South Mumbai to the suburbs, the city is glowing with anticipation, but it is Bandra that presents a particularly festive picture this season.

Colaba and Fort mark the season with tradition

At Holy Name Cathedral, the mother church of the Roman Catholic faith in the city, celebrations are unfolding amid extensive structural restoration. The parish has invited the community to contribute resources for the ongoing work. Advent wreath services have been held every Sunday since November 30, followed by carol singing and a concert by the cathedral choir. On Christmas Eve, carols at 9 pm will lead into midnight Mass at 9.30 pm, which will be live-streamed. Christmas Day Masses will be held in Konkani and English from 7 am onwards.

In Fort, St Thomas Cathedral, the seat of the CNI Bishop of Bombay, continues its centuries-old tradition. Inaugurated on Christmas Day in 1718, the cathedral’s stained-glass windows remain a highlight. The four Sundays of Advent were marked by the lighting of candles symbolising hope, peace, joy and love. Festive music at 10 pm on December 24 will be followed by Mass at 10.30 pm, while Christmas morning Mass is scheduled for 9 am.

Bandra shines with faith and festivity

In Bandra, Christmas celebrations draw crowds beyond parish boundaries. Mount Mary Basilica is attracting families and youngsters with its beautifully restored premises and illuminated façade. Outdoor midnight Mass will be held at 10 pm on Christmas Eve, with Christmas Day Masses beginning at 6.30 am.

At St Anne’s Church, winged angels adorn the interiors, reflecting this year’s theme, “Jesus: The Everlasting Light”. The crib, made using natural grass and plant waste, highlights sustainability. Carols will begin at 9.30 pm on December 24, followed by midnight Mass in the church lawns at 10 pm.

Meanwhile, St Andrew’s Church, recently rededicated by Cardinal Oswald Gracias, is observing a Christmas novena and special Advent prayers. Christmas Eve Mass will be held at the school grounds after carols at 10 pm.

Across Mumbai, these celebrations reflect not just faith, but a shared sense of community — making Christmas a citywide moment of light, music and togetherness.
