Mumbai: A viral video showing a man allegedly abusing a woman commuter and threatening to assault her with his trouser belt inside a Western Railway local train has prompted police action, with Andheri Government Railway Police (GRP) working to register an FIR and trace the accused.
The incident reportedly took place in a second-class general compartment of a Western Railway local train. A fellow passenger recorded the confrontation, and the video has since circulated widely on social media.
Police said they have identified the man based on the video footage and CCTV recordings from railway stations. Investigators are now examining CCTV footage to establish his movements and determine the route he took after leaving the train.
Man allegedly abuses woman over seat
According to reports, the confrontation began when the male commuter allegedly objected to the woman sleeping on a train seat.
Despite there reportedly being sufficient seating space inside the compartment, the man allegedly continued to shout at the woman and use abusive language.
The argument escalated after the woman objected to the manner in which he was speaking to her. The man initially walked away following the altercation.
However, when the woman reportedly warned him against raising his voice, the commuter returned and allegedly intensified the confrontation.
Trouser belt used to threaten commuter
The viral video reportedly shows the man taking off his trouser belt and attempting to use it to threaten or hurt the woman.
He allegedly continued to hurl abuses at her while wielding the belt.
Other passengers witnessed the confrontation, but according to reports, none intervened to stop the altercation. One commuter recorded the incident on a mobile phone, providing police with footage that is now being used as part of the investigation.
The video has drawn attention to passenger safety and the need for commuters to intervene responsibly or alert railway authorities when confrontations escalate inside crowded trains.
GRP scans CCTV footage
Andheri GRP said it is in the process of registering an FIR in connection with the incident.
Police have reportedly identified the male commuter using the video clip and CCTV footage from railway stations.
Investigators are scanning CCTV recordings to establish the route taken by the accused after the incident. Police said they are confident of locating and arresting him soon.
The footage from the train and railway stations is expected to help investigators reconstruct the sequence of events and establish the circumstances surrounding the confrontation.
Further action will follow after the FIR is registered and the accused is traced.
Recent train incidents raise concern
The latest incident comes against the backdrop of other serious cases involving altercations between commuters on Mumbai’s suburban railway network.
In January, college teacher Alok Kumar Singh was allegedly murdered by fellow commuter Omkar Shinde following a trivial dispute related to alighting at Malad station.
Another fatal incident was reported in June when 21-year-old clothing retail employee Mayank Lohar was allegedly killed by co-traveller Roshan Suvarna following an argument over shutting the compartment door during heavy rain.
The incidents have raised concerns over how seemingly minor disagreements between passengers can escalate into serious violence.
While the latest case did not result in any reported serious physical injury, the alleged use of a belt as a weapon has highlighted the potential danger posed by escalating confrontations inside railway compartments.
Investigation continues
The Andheri GRP investigation is focused on tracing the accused and determining the circumstances that led to the confrontation.
Police are examining the viral video as well as CCTV footage from railway stations to track the commuter’s movements.
The incident has also renewed concerns about passenger conduct and safety in Mumbai’s suburban trains. Railway compartments are used by thousands of commuters every day, and arguments over seating, doors and other routine issues can quickly escalate if not handled responsibly.
With the accused reportedly identified, police are now working to locate and apprehend him. The registration of the FIR and subsequent investigation will determine the legal action to be taken in the case.
