MUMBAI: In a swift and coordinated operation, Mumbai Police rescued a five-year-old girl who was kidnapped and trafficked by her maternal uncle and aunt, tracing her to Panvel and safely reuniting her with her mother. The shocking incident, which unfolded in Santacruz (East), has raised alarming questions about child trafficking networks operating across city borders.

Child kidnapped at midnight from Vakola

According to investigators, the child was abducted around midnight from Vakola in Santacruz (East). Police said the kidnapping was orchestrated by the girl’s maternal uncle and aunt, who took advantage of their proximity to the family and familiarity with the child.

The duo allegedly sold the girl for ₹90,000 to a buyer who, in turn, resold her to another individual for ₹1.80 lakh. The chain of transactions pointed not only to family betrayal but also to a wider trafficking link involving multiple suspects.

Social media alert helped highlight the case

Mumbai Police shared details of the rescue in a post on social media, writing:
“In a case involving the kidnapping and trafficking of a 5-year-old girl, @VakolaPS traced the child to Panvel and successfully apprehended five accused. Investigations revealed that the girl’s maternal uncle and aunt abducted her at midnight and sold her for ₹90,000. The buyer then resold the child to another person for ₹1.80 lakh. Acting swiftly, the @VakolaPS rescued the girl from Panvel and safely reunited her with her mother.”

The post gained traction online, drawing widespread relief and praise for the police’s timely action.

Police trace the child to Panvel

Acting on the mother’s complaint, officers from Vakola Police Station launched an urgent investigation. They collected surveillance footage, examined call records, and tracked the suspects’ movements with the help of local intelligence units.

The probe soon led the team to Panvel, where the trafficked child was believed to be held. A special team travelled to the location and carried out the rescue operation on November 25.

Once found, the frightened child was comforted by a police officer who offered her chocolates before she was safely brought back to Mumbai and reunited with her mother.

Five arrested for kidnapping and trafficking

Police confirmed that five individuals— including the child’s maternal uncle and aunt— have been arrested in connection with the case. They include both the initial buyers and those involved in the resale of the child.

Officers said each of the accused will be booked under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code, including kidnapping, human trafficking, criminal conspiracy, and wrongful confinement. Further sections under the Juvenile Justice Act and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act may also be added depending on the findings.

Investigation to uncover larger trafficking network

A senior police officer said the case highlights the disturbing trend of children being trafficked for money, often with the involvement of close relatives. Investigators are now probing whether the accused had links to a larger trafficking racket operating across Mumbai, Navi Mumbai, and neighbouring districts.

Police are also checking if similar complaints have been registered in the past and whether the same route or network was used to traffic other children.

Authorities emphasise importance of community vigilance

The rescue has renewed calls for stronger community vigilance, particularly in crowded localities like Vakola where children are at risk of being targeted by known acquaintances. Police urged citizens to report suspicious activity immediately and emphasised the importance of neighbourhood awareness in preventing such crimes.

Child rights activists have also appealed for more stringent monitoring of trafficking hotspots and stressed the need for counselling support for children who go through such traumatic experiences.

Conclusion

The swift rescue operation by Mumbai Police prevented a tragedy and reunited a young child with her mother. As the investigation widens, authorities hope to dismantle any networks linked to the kidnapping, while the case serves as a stark reminder of the vulnerabilities children face—even within their own families.
