A candid confession by a Mumbai taxi driver after overcharging a woman for a short ride — followed by friendly advice on how to avoid being scammed — has gone viral, with netizens calling it the “most Mumbai thing ever”.

The incident was shared on X by Mudrika Kavdia, who recounted her unusual experience while travelling from Crawford Market to Churchgate, a journey she said would take barely seven minutes.

Fare negotiation takes unexpected turn

According to Kavdia, the taxi driver initially quoted ₹200 for the ride. After some negotiation, the fare was settled at ₹150. However, once they reached Churchgate and the meter was switched on, it showed a final amount of ₹110.

What followed left her stunned. The driver openly admitted that he had overcharged her by ₹30–40 and then advised her to always insist on going by the meter in future.

“You are new here, that’s why I am telling you. Take care of yourself,” the driver reportedly told her.

‘Honesty mixed with hustle’

Sharing the story online, Kavdia described the moment as both surprising and oddly heartwarming. “The honesty mixed with the hustle was the most Mumbai thing ever,” she wrote, adding that she walked away feeling she had learned something valuable about the city and its people.

Her post quickly struck a chord, racking up over 2.2 lakh views and hundreds of comments.

Internet reacts: ‘You paid for advice’

Social media users responded with humour and affection, dubbing the exchange “peak Mumbai energy”. One user joked that she had essentially paid ₹50 for a life lesson, while another said that in Mumbai, people might hustle — but they also explain how the hustle works.

Some users even argued that negotiating a fixed fare might have saved her from a longer, meter-based route, sparking a wider debate on taxi ethics and street-smart travel in the city.

In the end, the episode reinforced a familiar sentiment online — that Mumbai, with all its chaos, often delivers its lessons with unexpected warmth.
