A 21-year-old college student from Kurla suffered burn injuries after a birthday celebration organised by his friends turned into a violent assault, leading to the arrest of five individuals. The incident, reported on Sunday, involved deliberate actions that police have termed a serious criminal offence.

Birthday celebration turns into assault

According to Kurla Police, the victim, Abdul Rehman Khan, was invited by his friends under the pretext of a casual birthday celebration. When he arrived, they forced him to cut a cake and allegedly engaged in acts that escalated into violence. During the incident, one of the accused reportedly poured an inflammable substance on Khan and ignited it, causing burn injuries.

Khan immediately sought help from a nearby building watchman and was rushed to a local hospital. Police confirmed that he sustained injuries to his upper body and required medical treatment.

The incident sparked immediate concern among local residents, who informed authorities. Police teams reached the spot and began preliminary inquiries based on the victim’s statement

Police register FIR and launch probe

Kurla police registered a First Information Report (FIR) under Section 110 of the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita (BNS), treating the act as an attempt to commit culpable homicide. Officers recorded statements from witnesses present during the celebration and examined the location where the incident occurred.

Police said all accused were known to the victim, indicating that the assault was not random. Investigators also stated that the act appeared to be intentional and premeditated, rather than a harmless celebratory prank.

Authorities collected additional evidence from the spot to ensure that the legal process proceeds without gaps.

Five friends arrested; investigation continues

The main accused, Ayaz Malik, along with four others—Ashraf Malik, Kasim Chowdhary, Huzaifa Khan, and Sharif Sheikh—were arrested after police analysed the victim’s statement, witness accounts and physical evidence.

All the accused have been remanded to police custody for further interrogation. Investigators are now probing the motive behind the act and whether there were any prior disputes or personal issues involved.

Police officials underscored the seriousness of the assault, stating that the case serves as a reminder that “dangerous pranks, even during celebrations, can have severe legal consequences.”

Victim undergoing treatment; condition stable

Khan is undergoing treatment at a local hospital. Doctors have stated that his condition is stable, though he requires continuous medical attention. Police are monitoring his recovery closely as part of the ongoing investigation.

Officers also urged the public to avoid risky celebratory behaviours that could endanger lives, emphasising that accountability will be enforced strictly in cases involving violence.

Conclusion

The Kurla incident has raised concerns about growing instances of violent behaviour disguised as celebratory acts. With all accused now in custody and the victim receiving medical care, police hope the case sends a strong message about the importance of responsible conduct and the legal repercussions of endangering a person’s life.
