A 22-year-old woman named Akanksha, hailing from Balihar in Dharmasthala, Karnataka, tragically died after falling from the ninth floor of a private university hostel in Phagwara, Punjab, late on the night of May 16.

Akanksha, an aerospace engineer working in Delhi for the past six months, had returned to her alma mater to collect her academic certificates in preparation for a new job opportunity in Japan. However, with the university postponing the certificate distribution by a day, she stayed overnight at the hostel.

Later that night, Akanksha reportedly fell from the ninth floor of the hostel building. She was rushed to a private hospital in Jalandhar by university staff but was declared dead on arrival.

The police have launched an inquiry into the circumstances of her death. Station House Officer (SHO) Hardeep Singh confirmed that a formal investigation is underway. The cause of her fall remains unclear, and authorities have not ruled out foul play.

Her grieving parents, Surendra and Sindhu Devi, reached Punjab on May 18 and have demanded a thorough and impartial investigation. Both the family and Akanksha’s friends have strongly dismissed any possibility of suicide, calling the incident highly suspicious.

Akanksha had travelled from Delhi to Punjab on the same day for her certificates, unaware that this delay would lead to her final stay at the university.

The tragic incident has sparked calls for campus safety and accountability.
