Nadda’s second three-year term ended in January 2024, but he was extended to oversee the 2024 Lok Sabha polls. Sources indicate another extension is likely, as internal elections for state units are extensive and time-consuming. During Amit Shah’s presidency, Nadda served as working president, a model that might be repeated.

The BJP’s Constitution allows a president two consecutive three-year terms, elected by an electoral college. Nadda, who became president in 2020, saw the BJP win 240 seats in the recent elections, necessitating alliances to form the government. His recent induction as Union Health Minister suggests he may not be re-elected as president. Criticism of the extension includes former BJP MP Subramanian Swamy’s complaint to the Election Commission regarding the lack of internal elections.
