Nagpur Man Turns to Crime to Pay Alimony, Lands Behind Bars

In a startling case from Nagpur, a jobless man resorted to chain-snatching to meet alimony payments to his ex-wife. The accused, Kanhaiya Narayan Baurashi, a resident of Ganpatinagar, Mankapur, was arrested while police were investigating a robbery reported earlier this year.

The incident came to light after Jayshree Jaykumar Gade (74) lodged a complaint about her gold chain being snatched by a motorcycle-borne thief on February 22 in Manishnagar. The police registered a case and began an investigation.

Using technical surveillance and local intelligence, authorities tracked down Kanhaiya. During interrogation, he confessed to the crime and further revealed that he had committed at least four chain-snatchings to gather funds. His motive, police said, was to pay ₹6,000 in monthly court-ordered alimony to his first wife.

Kanhaiya, unemployed for over two years, had remarried during the Covid-19 lockdown, worsening his financial stress. With no income and mounting obligations, he turned to theft as a last resort.

The probe also led police to Amardeep Krishnarao Nakhate, owner of Shri Sai Jewellers, who allegedly purchased stolen jewellery from Kanhaiya. Nakhate too was arrested for buying stolen property.

Both Kanhaiya and Nakhate are in police custody and the case has now been transferred to the Beltarodi police for further investigation.
