Mumbai: An Indian Navy sailor, his wife and their two young children were found dead at their official residence in Navy Nagar, Colaba, South Mumbai, prompting a police investigation.
The deceased were identified as 30-year-old sailor Puranmal Shambhulal Mehra, his 28-year-old wife Oma Puranmal Mehra, their three-year-old son Yash and their two-month-old daughter.
Police examine possible causes
The incident came to light on August 15 after police received information about a man found hanging at the Navy Nagar residence. Officers who reached the house found the sailor and his family members dead.
According to preliminary findings, police suspect that the sailor died by suicide, while his wife and children may have died after poisoning. However, officials have stressed that the exact circumstances and cause of death have not yet been established.
The bodies were taken to JJ Hospital for post-mortem examinations. Police said the reports will be important in determining the precise cause of the deaths. No suicide note has been recovered so far.
Navy extends assistance to investigators
The Indian Navy confirmed the deaths and said the incident occurred at its Navy Nagar accommodation on August 15.
In a statement, the Navy said an investigation was underway and that it was extending all possible assistance to the police.
Police have registered an accidental death report and are continuing inquiries into the circumstances surrounding the deaths. Investigators are also expected to examine evidence from the residence and speak to people who may have information about the family.
The tragic incident has shocked the Navy community, while authorities await the post-mortem findings before drawing further conclusions.
