New Delhi: The National Testing Agency (NTA) has officially cancelled the NEET-UG 2026 examination conducted on May 3 and announced that a fresh examination will be held on dates to be notified separately. The decision was taken following concerns over alleged irregularities and inputs received from investigative agencies.

The NTA stated that the cancellation was approved by the Government of India and aimed at ensuring transparency and maintaining the integrity of the examination process. The development has affected lakhs of medical aspirants across the country who appeared for the national-level undergraduate medical entrance examination earlier this month.

According to reports, the decision followed findings shared by central agencies and law enforcement authorities regarding alleged paper leak links and examination malpractice in multiple states.

Alleged paper leak triggered scrutiny

The controversy surrounding NEET-UG 2026 intensified after investigators reportedly discovered a “guess paper” circulating before the examination that allegedly matched several questions from the actual paper. Investigations initially focused on Rajasthan before expanding to other regions.

Authorities said the matter raised serious concerns over the fairness and credibility of one of India’s largest entrance examinations. Following the findings, the Centre ordered a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe into the alleged irregularities linked to the examination.

NEET-UG is the single national entrance examination for admissions to undergraduate medical courses, including MBBS programmes across government and private medical colleges in India. The examination is conducted annually by the NTA.

Lakhs of students affected

Reports indicate that nearly 23 lakh candidates had registered for NEET-UG 2026, making it one of the country’s largest competitive examinations. The cancellation has now created uncertainty among students and parents awaiting results and counselling schedules.

The NTA clarified that existing registration data would remain valid for the re-examination and candidates would not be required to submit fresh applications. Revised examination dates, admit card schedules and further instructions are expected to be announced soon through official channels.

Student organisations and opposition parties reacted strongly to the cancellation, demanding accountability and stronger safeguards to prevent examination leaks and malpractice in future national-level tests. Protests were also reported in parts of Delhi after the announcement.

Growing concerns over examination integrity

The latest controversy has once again put the spotlight on the functioning of the National Testing Agency and the broader issue of examination security in India.

In recent years, several major examinations conducted across the country have faced allegations ranging from paper leaks and impersonation to technical glitches and irregularities. Education experts say repeated controversies have raised concerns among students regarding the credibility of competitive examinations.

Super 30 founder Anand Kumar also reacted to the cancellation, calling for stricter regulation of coaching centres and stronger examination safeguards to ensure fairness in the system.

Meanwhile, students preparing for the re-test now face the challenge of maintaining momentum and revising again amid uncertainty over the revised examination schedule.

Awaiting official schedule

The NTA has advised candidates to regularly check official announcements for updates regarding the revised NEET-UG 2026 examination schedule.

Officials said further details regarding admit cards, examination centres and other procedural guidelines would be released in due course.

As investigations continue into the alleged malpractice network, the cancellation of NEET-UG 2026 is expected to remain a major national issue in the education sector in the coming weeks.
