Chennai: Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay is set to launch the Thaimaman Thanga Mothiram Thittam, a scheme promising a gold ring for every baby born in government hospitals across the State.
Vijay had first announced the scheme on March 7, 2026, during the International Women’s Day celebration organised by the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) at Mamallapuram, when he was campaigning ahead of the Assembly elections.
Now, after assuming office as Chief Minister, Vijay has announced the scheduled launch of the scheme.
A promise made during the election campaign
The Thaimaman Thanga Mothiram Thittam, meaning the maternal uncle gold ring scheme, was among the first set of poll promises unveiled by Vijay with a focus on women and youth.
Under the scheme, babies born in government hospitals in Tamil Nadu will receive a gold ring, turning an election promise into a welfare measure aimed at families using the State’s public healthcare system.
Rs 755.83 crore earmarked every year
The scale of the scheme is significant. According to a State government order issued on June 23, an annual allocation of Rs 755.83 crore has been earmarked for its implementation.
The government plans to procure gold rings for 4,41,667 deliveries taking place in government hospitals.
The figures indicate the State’s planned commitment to implementing the scheme on a large scale across its government healthcare network.
A scheme centred on newborns and families
The gold ring is intended to mark the birth of children delivered in government hospitals while extending a direct benefit to families.
For thousands of families, the initiative could turn the arrival of a newborn into an occasion marked by a tangible government-supported gesture.
With the scheduled launch now announced, attention will turn to how the scheme is implemented across government hospitals and how eligible families receive the promised gold rings.
