Cuttack, Aug 16: Odisha has joined Kerala and Bihar in implementing a menstrual leave policy, granting one day of menstrual leave to working women in both public and private sectors. This announcement was made by Deputy Chief Minister Pravati Parida on Thursday during Independence Day celebrations.

The new policy allows women employees to take one day off on the first or second day of their menstrual cycle, at their discretion. This move aims to provide relief and support for working women experiencing menstrual discomfort. Parida highlighted the policy’s optional nature, providing flexibility for women in both government and private sectors.

“Previously, menstrual leave was not permitted. Now, it will be optional for women to take leave on the first or second day of their menstrual cycle,” Parida told reporters. The state’s women and child development department is expected to release detailed guidelines soon.

The announcement has been well-received by women employees and rights activists, who view it as a progressive step towards addressing menstrual health and workplace equality. This policy aligns with a growing national conversation on the need for menstrual leave and paid time off for women and students.

The Odisha government’s decision comes in the wake of a Supreme Court directive on July 8, urging the Centre to consult stakeholders regarding a comprehensive policy for working women. The policy is seen as a move to enhance the BJP administration’s image as progressive and responsive to women’s issues.

Approximately 150,000 of the state’s 400,000 government employees are women, while around 500,000 women are employed in the private sector. The policy’s implementation aims to address menstrual health needs and promote a supportive work environment for women across sectors.
