A tragic accident at a school in Odisha’s Balasore district claimed the life of a young student, triggering widespread grief and anger over alleged negligence and unsafe construction practices within school premises.

The incident occurred during the midday meal break when students were playing inside the school campus. Reports said a concrete slab, installed as part of ongoing construction work for a new building, suddenly broke and fell on a student identified as Prahlad Dhal, leaving him critically injured.

Rushed to hospital, but life could not be saved

School authorities and local residents immediately rushed Prahlad to the Baliapal IDCO Community Health Centre. Due to the severity of his injuries, doctors referred him to AIIMS, Remuna in Balasore for advanced treatment.

Despite sustained medical efforts, Prahlad succumbed to his injuries. Doctors later declared him dead, leaving the school community and the village in deep shock.

Anger over safety lapses

The incident has sparked strong reactions from parents, guardians and local residents, who have blamed negligence and lack of safety precautions for the tragedy. They alleged that construction work was being carried out during school hours while students were present on the campus.

Residents pointed out that no protective barriers or warning signs were in place, exposing children to serious danger. “How can construction be allowed when children are playing here?” questioned a grieving parent, echoing widespread public anger.

Demands for probe and accountability

Community members have demanded a thorough investigation into the incident, strict accountability of those responsible, and immediate action against officials and contractors involved. The tragedy has once again raised serious concerns over infrastructure standards, supervision and child safety in Odisha’s government schools.

Many have urged the state education department to issue clear guidelines prohibiting construction activity during school hours and to conduct safety audits of all ongoing school infrastructure projects.

Chief Minister announces ex-gratia

Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi expressed deep sorrow over the death of the student. Conveying heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family, he assured government support during this difficult time.

The Chief Minister announced an ex-gratia assistance of ₹4 lakh from the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund (CMRF) to the deceased student’s immediate family.

A painful reminder

The incident has reignited a wider debate on child safety and administrative responsibility in educational institutions. As the community mourns Prahlad’s untimely death, there is growing pressure on authorities to ensure that such preventable tragedies are not repeated.
