Somnath, a humble tea vendor from Bolangir, Odisha, has captured national attention after Prime Minister Narendra Modi praised his unique tea at the ‘Odisha Parba 2024’ held in New Delhi. Somnath, known for his distinctive tea-making skills, served a special brew featuring Ambakasia Adaa (Mango Ginger) and other secret ingredients to the Prime Minister. Taking three sips of the tea, Modi reportedly remarked, “lajawaab” (extraordinary), leaving the vendor overjoyed.
For Somnath, this encounter was a dream come true. Speaking to local media, he revealed how he had long wished to meet Modi, a desire he once shared with his family, only to be scolded for “daydreaming.” Overwhelmed with emotions during the meeting, Somnath admitted to trembling with nervousness but was reassured by Modi’s warm demeanor. “He entered my stall like a tiger and asked, ‘Bolo Bhaiya, kya kya milta hai tumhare dukaan mein?’” recounted Somnath.
Somnath’s tea stall, Rabi Tea Stall in Bolangir’s daily market, has now become a symbol of pride for the town, highlighting its unique tea culture. Reflecting on the experience, Somnath shared, “This year’s Delhi visit was unforgettable. I couldn’t say all I had planned, but Modi Ji’s appreciation was more than enough.”
This recognition not only fulfills Somnath’s personal dream but also shines a spotlight on Bolangir, showcasing the charm of small-town India and its exceptional flavors.
