A one-month-old infant died at the Sub-District Hospital (SDH) Uri on Monday, triggering allegations of medical negligence by the bereaved family. Hospital authorities, however, have denied the claims and said the baby was brought in a highly critical condition and managed as per medical protocols.

The infant has been identified as Asger Ali, son of Mehboob Mughal, a resident of Bandi Uri in Baramulla district.

Family alleges delay and lack of care

According to family members, the baby was taken to SDH Uri in the morning after his condition deteriorated. They alleged that the child was not properly examined by doctors and did not receive timely medical intervention.

The family further claimed they were advised to approach a private healthcare facility, which led to a delay in treatment and ultimately resulted in the infant’s death.

“This was a very small child who needed immediate attention. We feel the delay cost him his life,” a family member alleged, demanding accountability.

Hospital rejects negligence charges

Hospital authorities have categorically denied the allegations. The Block Medical Officer (BMO) Uri said the infant was received in an extremely critical state and was immediately attended to by the medical team.

According to the BMO, doctors assessed the baby and promptly referred him to Government Medical College Baramulla for specialised paediatric care, which was beyond the facilities available at SDH Uri.

“The child was examined as per standard medical guidelines and referred without delay. Unfortunately, the family did not take the baby to the referred government hospital,” the BMO said.

Family chose private consultation: officials

Health officials stated that instead of proceeding to GMC Baramulla, the family opted to consult a private paediatrician. They said this decision was taken independently by the family and was not advised by the hospital authorities.

Officials maintained that SDH Uri followed all established procedures and that the referral was made in the best interest of the child.

Inquiry committee constituted

In view of the serious allegations, authorities have constituted an inquiry committee to examine the circumstances surrounding the infant’s death. The panel will review medical records, referral notes and statements from both hospital staff and the family.

Officials said appropriate action will be taken based on the findings of the inquiry.

The incident has sparked concern among local residents in Uri, with many calling for improved neonatal facilities and clearer communication between hospitals and families during medical emergencies.
