Police have detained another student in connection with the tragic death of Class X student Mohammed Shahbaz, who succumbed to injuries after a student clash in Thamarassery, Kozhikode, on February 27.
The arrested student, from GVHSS Thamarassery, was identified through social media chats in an Instagram group where details of the altercation were discussed. He had recently joined the tuition centre and attended the farewell event on February 23, where the dispute initially erupted. This brings the total number of students booked in the case to six.
Police took the student to the crime scene before recording his detailed statement at the Thamarassery police station. He was presented before the Juvenile Justice Board and placed in an observation home in Vellimadukunnu, though he has been allowed to continue writing his SSLC exams there.
The investigation is expanding, with authorities examining student chats and sending mobile devices for forensic analysis to determine if more individuals were involved. Meanwhile, Shahbaz’s father, Iqbal, has alleged that some parents also witnessed and supported the attack but are being shielded out of fear.
Shahbaz, a student of MJ Higher Secondary School, sustained a skull fracture inflicted by a heavy weapon, as per the preliminary postmortem report. Police have recovered the nunchaku used in the attack from a student’s residence.
