A 27-year-old man allegedly died by suicide in Choutuppal town of Yadadri-Bhongir district after suffering heavy financial losses linked to online betting, police said on Wednesday.
Financial stress linked to betting habit
The deceased was identified as Balagoni Pavan Kumar, who ran a cattle feed business on Valigonda Road in Choutuppal. According to police, Pavan had developed a habit of online betting over the past few years, which reportedly resulted in financial losses running into several lakh rupees.
Investigators said the mounting losses pushed him into significant debt, causing severe mental stress.
Family intervention failed to help
Police stated that after the family became aware of Pavan’s financial difficulties, his father, Srinivas, stepped in and cleared the outstanding loans. He also warned his son against returning to online betting activities.
However, police said Pavan allegedly continued betting and once again incurred losses, leading to fresh debts. Unable to cope with the renewed financial pressure and fearing he would not be able to explain the situation to his family, he is believed to have taken the extreme step.
Body found at home
The incident occurred on Tuesday night when Pavan was alone at home. He allegedly died by hanging from a ceiling fan. The matter came to light when his father returned home later and found the door locked from inside.
After repeated knocks went unanswered, Srinivas broke open the door and discovered his son. Police were immediately alerted.
Investigation underway
The Choutuppal Police registered a case and have begun an investigation into the circumstances leading to the death. Officials said further inquiry is underway to verify financial records and digital activity related to online betting.
Authorities once again cautioned against the growing dangers of online betting platforms and urged individuals facing financial or emotional distress to seek timely support from family members and professionals.
