Residents and businesses in Portofino and Genoa were left frustrated and angered by disruptions caused during a pre-wedding celebration for the younger son of India’s wealthiest individual Mukesh Ambani
Mukesh Ambani, the chairman of Reliance Industries, hosted a four-day luxury cruise from Palermo to the south of France and back, commemorating his son Anant’s engagement to Radhika Merchant, the daughter of a wealthy industrialist. The extravagant event included stops in Rome, Portofino, Genoa, and Cannes for a series of lavish parties.
This was the second pre-wedding celebration following an extravagant gala held in Mukesh Ambani’s hometown of Jamnagar in March, which reportedly cost $150 million. The cruise commenced on May 29 and made a stop at Portofino on June 1 for a party themed “La Dolce Vita” to capture the essence of an Italian summer.
Despite strict no-phone policies, videos from the event surfaced online, revealing performances by American band Backstreet Boys and singer Katy Perry, among others, entertaining the over 800 attendees.
However, the festivities sparked outrage among locals and businesses in Portofino, as the entire bay was blocked off, denying access to residents and other tourists. This picturesque village, known for its celebrity weddings, had never been closed down for any event before.
Reports indicate that nearly a dozen restaurants were offered varying amounts to cater to the event, including offerings such as focaccia, paneer tikka, and beetroot goat cheese kebab. However, one renowned restaurant manager expressed dissatisfaction with the late notice and inadequate compensation, highlighting the disrespect shown to both customers and the establishment’s reputation.
Residents and tourists took to social media to voice their frustrations, condemning the disruption caused by the extravagant celebration. Despite past events hosted by billionaires, none had previously restricted access to the main areas of the city, leading to questions about entitlement and privilege.
The disruptive nature of the festivities also impacted Genoa, as loud music from the cruise ship disturbed residents early on Sunday morning. Local authorities allegedly failed to take action despite complaints, leaving residents and businesses dismayed by the lack of consideration shown by the organizers.
Mukesh Ambani, known as Asia’s wealthiest individual, has investments across various sectors, including oil, retail, and telecommunications. However, the controversy surrounding his son’s pre-wedding celebrations has raised questions about extravagance and privilege in the face of community disruption.
