A minor blaze ignited in the restroom of a moving Daund-Pune shuttle train near Yevat in Pune district on Monday at approximately 8 a.m., after a commuter allegedly discarded a lit bidi into a trash bin. The smoldering bidi set ablaze paper and garbage inside the bin, leading to smoke filling the lavatory and triggering alarm among travelers.
Railway officials stated that the incident occurred inside a Diesel Electric Multiple Unit (DEMU) coach with only a handful of passengers aboard at the time. The source of the fire was identified as trash igniting due to the disposed smoking item. As smoke billowed out from the restroom, concerned passengers raised the alarm.
A 55-year-old individual from Madhya Pradesh has been taken into custody in connection with the event, according to a spokesperson for Indian Railways. Authorities acted swiftly—railway personnel managed to douse the flames promptly, averting any casualties or injuries.
An officer from the Daund railway police station confirmed the incident and emphasized the importance of avoiding reckless behavior onboard trains. The railway department has urged passengers to adhere strictly to safety norms and avoid carrying or using any fire-related materials during travel.
The situation was brought under control swiftly, with no damage reported apart from the minor fire and resulting scare.
