Fresh allegations of medical negligence have emerged from Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital following the death of a patient, reportedly linked to lack of basic infrastructure and assistance. The incident marks the second such death at the hospital within three days, intensifying concerns over patient safety.
Patient collapses after being asked to walk to toilet
The deceased, identified as Biswajit Samanta, was admitted to the trauma care unit early Monday morning with severe chest pain. While treatment had reportedly begun, his condition worsened following an incident that his family claims could have been avoided.
According to relatives, Samanta needed to use a toilet but was informed that no such facility was available on the trauma care floor. He was allegedly directed to a “pay and use” toilet located about 100 metres away from the unit.
Despite his critical condition, the family claims that no stretcher or assistance was provided. Left with no option, Samanta attempted to walk the distance himself. After covering nearly 50 metres and attempting to climb stairs, he collapsed and lost consciousness.
Family alleges serious lapses in care
Samanta’s wife alleged that basic medical support was denied at a crucial moment, forcing him to move without assistance. He was later taken to the emergency department, where doctors declared him brought dead.
The incident sparked protests from family members, who accused the hospital of systemic failures in infrastructure and patient handling. They questioned how essential facilities like toilets and stretchers were unavailable in a major government hospital.
Second death in three days raises alarm
The case comes close on the heels of another death at the same hospital on March 20. A man, identified as Arup Bannerjee, reportedly died following an elevator malfunction in the trauma care building.
According to reports, he was trapped inside a lift that stopped working. Though later rescued and shifted to emergency care, he succumbed to his injuries. Police have since arrested five individuals linked to the elevator’s maintenance.
Calls for accountability and reform
The back-to-back incidents have raised serious concerns over safety standards and accountability in public healthcare institutions. Authorities have yet to issue a detailed statement regarding the latest allegations.
The tragic events highlight the urgent need for improved infrastructure, timely assistance, and stricter monitoring to ensure that patients receive safe and dignified care.
