In a deeply disturbing incident that has raised concerns over the safety of women living in paying guest (PG) accommodations, Pune Police have registered a molestation case against a PG owner for allegedly exploiting a young woman when she was heavily intoxicated and defenceless.

Incident reported at Balaji Nagar PG

The accused has been identified as Tirumala alias Raghurao Tirum Laya Kotha (35), a resident of Balaji Nagar in Ghorpadi. The complaint was lodged by a 24-year-old working woman residing in the same PG, under the jurisdiction of Chandan Nagar Police Station.

According to police officials, the incident occurred around 12.30 am on December 12. The complainant had attended a party with friends, where she reportedly consumed excessive alcohol and became physically unstable.

Left alone in a vulnerable condition

Concerned friends dropped her back at the PG but allegedly left her sitting alone on the staircase instead of escorting her safely to her room. Police said the woman was semi-conscious and unable to protect herself at the time.

Taking advantage of her vulnerable condition, the PG owner allegedly approached her from behind, hugged her forcibly, and behaved indecently with the intent to outrage her modesty.

Complaint leads to police action

The woman later stated that the incident caused her severe mental trauma and humiliation. After regaining composure, she approached the police and provided a detailed account of the incident.

Based on her complaint, Chandan Nagar Police registered a case under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code related to molestation. The investigation is being led by Assistant Police Inspector Salve, who confirmed that witness statements are being recorded and supporting evidence is being gathered.

Safety concerns for working women

The incident has once again highlighted the risks faced by young working women living away from their families in metropolitan cities. Police have also indicated that the role of the complainant’s friends in leaving her unattended is being examined as part of the inquiry.

A senior police officer reiterated that strict action will be taken if the charges are proven, stressing that no individual has the right to exploit a woman’s vulnerable condition.
