A 20-year-old second-year pharmacy student was found dead, hanging from a ceiling fan in his rented room in Jalgaon city on Sunday evening. Police have registered a case of abetment of suicide against the college principal following a complaint by the student’s father.
The deceased has been identified as Shyam Patil, a resident of Bodvad in Muktainagar taluka of Jalgaon district. He was pursuing his studies at a private pharmacy college and was staying in a rented apartment in Daulat Nagar area, like many other students.
Note alleges public assault
According to police, a note purportedly written by Shyam was recovered from his pocket. Deputy SP Nitin Ganapure stated that the note alleged the student took the extreme step after being beaten by the college principal in front of fellow students and staff following a quarrel between two groups.
Shyam’s father, Prabhakar Patil, mentioned in his complaint that his son had called him on February 14 and informed him about a dispute in college. Though not directly involved, the principal allegedly slapped him and beat him with a PVC pipe publicly.
Case registered; search underway
Around 5 pm on Sunday, other students discovered Shyam hanging in his room and informed the landlord, who alerted the family and police. Based on the father’s complaint, the Ramanand police registered an FIR against the principal for abetment of suicide. His whereabouts are currently unknown.
The chairman of the institute, former state minister Gulabrao Deokar, stated that the police would investigate the matter as an FIR had been filed.
Shyam is survived by his father, a farmer, his mother, grandfather and twin brother. Police said further investigation is underway.
