Thiruvananthapuram: Fresh tensions have surfaced within the opposition INDIA bloc after senior CPI(M) leader and former Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan criticised Congress leader Rahul Gandhi over comments regarding opposition unity, accusing him of adopting an approach that weakens the alliance and indirectly benefits the BJP.
The controversy erupted following remarks made by Rahul Gandhi during a recent podcast, where he said he could not hug Pinarayi Vijayan because there was an ongoing political battle between them. The statement quickly triggered reactions within opposition circles, prompting a sharp response from the veteran Left leader.
Pinarayi responds to Rahul’s remarks
Addressing the issue, Pinarayi Vijayan said the matter was not about physical gestures but about the political message conveyed through Rahul Gandhi’s comments.
He noted that greetings between political leaders generally involve handshakes rather than embraces and said there had never been a tradition of hugging during his interactions with the Congress MP.
“Hugging normally does not happen among us. When Rahul Gandhi and I meet, we greet each other or shake hands. We do not hug,” Pinarayi said.
The former chief minister then referred to a widely circulated photograph of Rahul Gandhi embracing Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Parliament, saying he had no objection to such gestures but questioned the context in which Rahul’s latest remarks were made.
Questions over INDIA bloc unity
Pinarayi argued that Rahul Gandhi’s comments reflected a broader issue regarding how the Congress leadership views its allies within the INDIA bloc.
According to him, the statement raised concerns about the Congress party’s commitment to strengthening opposition unity at a time when parties are attempting to present a united front against the BJP.
“This shows Rahul Gandhi’s way of speaking and how he is seeing the INDIA bloc,” he said.
The CPI(M) leader suggested that differences within the alliance extend beyond the Left parties and involve concerns expressed by several regional partners.
Claims of dissatisfaction among allies
Pinarayi claimed that various opposition leaders had previously raised concerns about the Congress party’s approach during discussions within the alliance.
He referred to leaders such as Akhilesh Yadav and Tejashwi Yadav, alleging that dissatisfaction with the Congress was not confined to a single party or region.
The former chief minister also pointed to developments involving the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK), suggesting that alliance dynamics continue to evolve across states.
While he did not elaborate on specific disagreements, Pinarayi maintained that the current situation stemmed largely from what he described as the Congress leadership’s political attitude.
Warning that BJP could benefit
In one of his strongest remarks, Pinarayi warned that the Congress party’s handling of relationships within the alliance could ultimately benefit the BJP.
According to him, opposition parties must focus on building cohesion rather than creating friction among partners.
“It is not really strengthening the INDIA bloc. As I have said earlier, it is reaching a point where it is helping the BJP,” he said.
The comments underline continuing challenges faced by the opposition alliance as it seeks to coordinate strategies across multiple states while accommodating diverse political interests.
Opposition alliance faces recurring strains
The INDIA bloc was formed as a coalition of opposition parties aiming to challenge the BJP at the national level. However, differences over leadership, seat-sharing arrangements and state-level rivalries have periodically strained relations among constituent parties.
In Kerala, the Congress and CPI(M) remain direct political rivals despite being partners in the broader opposition coalition at the national level. Similar contradictions exist in several other states, where alliance members compete against each other in local elections while cooperating nationally.
Political observers note that these competing interests continue to test the unity and effectiveness of the alliance.
Debate over opposition strategy
The latest exchange has reignited discussions about leadership and coordination within the opposition camp.
While Congress leaders have consistently emphasised the need for unity against the BJP, several regional parties have occasionally expressed concerns about decision-making and the Congress party’s role within the alliance.
Pinarayi’s remarks are likely to intensify those discussions and could prompt fresh efforts among alliance partners to address internal differences ahead of future political contests.
Conclusion
Pinarayi Vijayan’s criticism of Rahul Gandhi has exposed fresh fault lines within the INDIA bloc, highlighting ongoing tensions over leadership and alliance management. While both the Congress and CPI(M) remain part of the broader opposition coalition, the latest war of words underscores the challenges of maintaining unity among parties that continue to compete fiercely in several states.
