The latest international recognition further adds to her distinguished career and highlights the growing role of Indian women in global peacekeeping and defence services.

India’s strong contribution to UN peacekeeping

India remains one of the largest contributors of troops and police personnel to United Nations peacekeeping missions.

According to UN data, the recipient of the Military Gender Advocate of the Year Award is selected annually from candidates nominated by force commanders and mission heads serving in peacekeeping operations across the world.

As of February 2026, UNIFIL comprised 7,538 peacekeepers from 48 troop-contributing countries. India contributed 642 personnel, making it the fourth-largest contributor to the mission after Italy, Indonesia and Spain.
